Tranexamic Acid: A Powerful Antifibrinolytic for Bleeding Control

Tranexamic Acid (TXA) is a widely used antifibrinolytic drug that prevents excessive bleeding by inhibiting plasminogen activation and stabilizing blood clots. It is used in trauma, surgeries, postpartum hemorrhage, dental procedures, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

TXA has become a cornerstone in emergency medicine, particularly after the CRASH-2 trial demonstrated significant reductions in mortality from traumatic bleeding. It is also standard in orthopedic surgeries, obstetrics, and cardiac surgery to minimize transfusion needs.

Forms include oral tablets, IV injections, and topical solutions. Side effects are generally mild, although caution is needed in patients with clotting disorders or thromboembolic disease.

With strong safety evidence, tranexamic acid remains a life-saving intervention in global medical practice.
